The Creativity and Parkinson’s: Insights 2008 wall calendar draws on the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation’s (PDF’s) new and exciting Quality of Life initiative. PDF defines Quality of Life (QoL) therapies in Parkinson’s as those therapies that are (i) non-pharmacologic in nature, and (ii) largely or wholly within the control of the person with Parkinson’s.
Among the most widely used therapies are painting, sculpting, singing, drumming, exercise, sewing, and dancing – activities that can often help to free people, albeit temporarily, from their Parkinson’s symptoms. While scientists continue to explore the reasons behind this phenomenon, many people living with Parkinson’s are already successfully incorporating creative activities into their daily lives.
The art in ‘Insights 2008’ is taken from artwork appearing here in PDCreativity.org (see ‘Gallery’) and is all created by people with Parkinson’s. It is hoped the impact of the artwork, and the artists’ statements highlighting the value that creativity plays in their lives, will fuel further research on the creative process, and the therapeutic value of creativity in Parkinson’s.
